Family is central to so much in our lives, yet for most of us all we know of our family is the generation or two that came before us and the generation that comes after. And maybe some great old stories about “crazy uncle Byron” (no offense, Uncle Byron!). But about the lives of our great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, and so on, we know very little. And yet the lives of these ancestors, and the choices they made, may have affected the course of our own lives in ways that we can only imagine.

Journey through space and time

A simple truth is that everyone comes from somewhere. In America, so many of us come from somewhere else. At some point, each of our ancestors stepped off a ship, or a train, or truck, or a plane, with the courage to face an unknown land. Some of our ancestors arrived looking for new opportunities in a new land. Many of our ancestors arrived escaping harsh conditions – war, famine, poverty, persecution. Few of us live where our immigrant ancestors arrived. Spreading out across our vast land, they built new homes and families, and their descendants repeating that pattern, fanning out to populate the continent. Through genealogy we can come to understand our families and the migrations that brought us to where we are today.
